I was just thinking about the lives of women in Afghanistan before and after the Taliban. It made me wonder about the potential of any nation to move so far backward in a world that has been driven by ideas of futurism and progress. It’s so fucking miserable. I live in a Muslim country and have countless Muslim friends. Not a single one of them would tell you that the Taliban is justifiable.
It’s clearly not about Islam itself, but rather about using Islam as a basis or an excuse, for exercising power in a way that goes beyond dictatorship. It is about control, domination, and the preservation of a system built on the idea that women are inferior.
The most painful part is that we live in a world where women are leaders, doctors, teachers, scientists, and creators. Women have contributed to every part of society, yet there are still people who feel threatened by the idea of women having independence and authority. At its core, it is male chauvinism.
I imagine the mindset is something like this: I am the man. Women depend on me. This is what is written for us in the books. I am the breadwinner. I am the one with power. My wife and children should bow to me. They should serve me. I have the right to decide my daughter's future, to marry her off as if she is something I own.
And that is the terrifying part: the belief that another human being can be treated as property. The belief that a woman’s dreams, education, and freedom matter less simply because she was born a woman. It is a system where the suffering of women becomes invisible because they are viewed as lesser, not as equal human beings deserving of dignity, opportunity, and respect.
