Have a good plot/climax, demonstrate character growth, it's really yummy when a character starts out as really sad/broken but change into a completely different persona ( most likely better ) at the end of the story, unless your aiming for a more sad story and making the character start out happy and turn depressed because of some event/person. Also, you need description, find a way to describe your character and others as well, especially the eyes, skin, and hair. Also show how what they've gone through in life has influenced them and where they are now and how it affects the way they live. Also, make sure to use the same descriptive word or character name/pronoun. It's less interesting to read a story where every sentence starts with he/she or the use the same word to describe the charities and his/hers surroundings.
