my number one writing pet peeve perpetuated by wattpad authors is the, ‘i’m not like other girls’, stereotype. because, really, all that’s saying is ‘i’m better than other girls, because i’m not stereotypically feminine’. what’s wrong with other girls? why can’t we just embrace one another, instead of tearing each other down? is this really a narrative you — as an influential figure — want to promote to a young, impressionable audience?

it’s just as harmful as the abusive, ‘oh, he kidnapped me, but he’s a werewolf, so it’s okay’, narrative. you’re teaching girls to behave submissively and lose their voices. do you genuinely think that a girl, or even a boy (or gender nonspecific / nonconforming individual), being kidnapped... held from their family... being pushed up against a wall and kissed without consent, is sexy or ‘okay’ because they’re a mythical beast? is that enough to justify sexual assault for you?

i’ve tried to have this discussion in the comment section before, only for an army of children to jump down my throat. ‘it’s only a book,’ they proclaim, not realising that they’re proving my point. out of context, a woman being held against a wall, forcibly kissed and ‘marked’ is horrific and a chargeable offence; but, in the eyes of these impressionable children, it’s been portrayed as plot progression and justified behaviour.

our differences are what make us unique, and you should really consider what you want your writing to express before you put the pen to paper.

@cherriirose i absolutely agree, and this is just why you’re one of my best friends on this freaking earth!!

it’s all about normalising abusive or toxic behaviours, which will only negatively impact the impressionable youth. people in the comments only make it worse, because they’re too immature or young to understand what’s really happening, which only shows how affective this method of manipulation is. it’s like how the film lolita became intensely fetishised with every remake, which wasn’t the purpose of the book — at least when i read it, and from my take, the point was to be affronted and appalled by the humbert and his obsession with ‘nymphets’. humbert isn’t a good guy, so why are ‘bad boys’ so intensely admired in wattpad literature? i assume it’s something to do with the allure, but regardless it astounds me.

i was just about to get three ads in a row, on short chapters that couldn’t have had more than 800 words. if you are getting ads on any of my books, just know that i’m not making any money (or royalties, etc) off it and i’m genuinely sorry that they’re disturbing your reading experience.

probablybelle

wow, i really had that whole ‘i read edgy werwolf books and bad, bad fanfiction’ phase and i hate myself for it. how did my brain cells not actually disintegrate?

that moment when you’ve made a cover for someone and they don’t credit it you... yaaay.

probablybelle

@RDQuitis yeah, thank u <3 i’m happy the books been successful anyway, they seemed sweet at the time.

@probablybelle I mean, I would credit you if I did use a cover you made, but seeing as I like making my own, I do not need to credit anyone. Though, it does suck that someone wouldn't credit you. Credit should always be given when you use someone else's property for yourself.
