honestly. when are we going to stop treating people on the autism spectrum like babies?
i understand being more careful around them as to not trigger panic attacks or overstimulate them, that’s 100% okay! but there are MANY things they can do on their own.
as well as the fact that they are NOT “cute” for the way their mind works. please stop acting like they’re mentally 5 and don’t know how to do anything. many people on the spectrum are stronger than the average neurotypical and we should give them credit for that.
just speak to them as if they’re human. don’t speak down to them or use a baby voice. that’s so patronizing. and don’t be friends with them or kind to them ONLY so you can look like a good person for being friendly with an autistic person.
some people are just messed up and i’m tired of the ways some friends and even some family are treated. they are human beings. they aren’t much different than neurotypicals. they aren’t a “special breed” of human. just because their brain is “wired” differently doesn’t mean anything. treat them like every other person and stop patronizing them.
of course don’t overwhelm them, but don’t be extremely careful as if you’re dealing with a 4 year old. thank you

@spookyonion i agree! even i used to say it because i really didn’t know it was offensive until i found out over the internet that it was wrong. the people who aren’t willing to change or own up to their mistakes are the worst, though. AND YES, i hope more people become aware of these things. people with any disabilities aren’t cute or funny, they’re human beings and shouldn’t be laughed at or treated differently (in unnecessary ways) for the things they have been born with

i think people don ' t call it out because the meaning of the word has been blurred a little . some people don ' t know the real meaning and use it as another word for stupid . it ' s still not right , but sometimes it ' s not their fault . as long as they ' re willing to correct themselves after they find out , that ' s all that matters . and it is disgusting . hopefully with more conversations about mental health being opened up , that starts to go away .

@spookyonion i hear it TOO often any many people don’t get called out on it- but YES the people who only stick around to feel/look like a good person are ridiculous. i’m sorry that happens. people just don’t understand basic human decency and are taking advantage of their privilege to put atypicals and disabled people down. the whole “i’m glad i’m not that person” mindset is disgusting and it’s unfortunately pretty common in neurotypicals
