          John Berger once said: "Men act and women appear. Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at". It's one of my favorite quotes of all time. Femininity is a performance - theres stage makeup and certain expressions and lines to say and a manner of speaking if you must improvise. There is a specific role to play to be "just a girl", that of the insecure yet beautiful yet incompetent child. Men don't need to do that, though. A man will shirk his socially assigned role, which one could say is being a protector or provider, and still be accepted into society as an upstanding member. A woman steps away from her post and she is deficient; a man steps away and he is a visionary. I want you to read the short story Cat Person by Kristen Roupenian. You'll notice that the protagonist, Margot, sees her relationship (with the man she's talking to, Robert), through his eyes more than her own: What does he think of me? What do I look like? What does he see? Instead of experiencing Robert, Margot experiences Robert experiencing her. We live in this world. We live like this.
          Read real feminist literature, girls. Misogyny is not in the image of the stereotypical woman: its in the insistence that glamorized depictions of one way of life is the only way theough. Read Cat Person. Read The Feminine Mystique. Read through the history of feminist movements across the world. Educate yourself. It's your first and most important weapon.

          I feel like wattpad had its own brand of suicidiality. for a period of time, it felt like every other friend I had on here was suicidal or self harming, and that was just the way it was for us weird teen girls. it felt a bit like clinging to each other, like we were each other's surety, like we were best friends in real life. and then we collectively hit high school and life got real, and the last generation of wattpad girls grew up and now theres only a few smatterings of young girls on this website. I hope life has been treating you well, wattpad girls. I hope you dont get hit with the same insecurities we suffered.
