I know I’m kinda late mentioning this but, even though I can’t add much to the conversation as a white American, I wanted to bring people’s attention to the amount of Asian hate that has been going on.
Now, of course, this is not a new thing. It has always been present in society but a lot of it is coming to light. Asian hate crimes don’t tend to get a lot of attention but they should because just like every other type of hate crime, they are very important.
Since the pandemic, hate crimes towards Asian people have increased dramatically. One reason these crimes tend to lack attention is that Asians are a “model minority.”
A model minority is basically the expectation placed on Asians that, as a group, each one will be highly intelligent, successful, docile, etc. (I suggest researching it because it is interesting).
Just as everyone did with the Black Lives Matter movement, we need to really bring Asian hate into the light and make an effort to stop it.
This is an ongoing battle and not a trend.
Look up people’s stories, ways to help, petitions to sign, etc.
And take this time to reflect on macro or microaggressions that you have committed. Look at other minorities and educate yourself on ways to help everybody.
Once again, I cannot give you any substance since I have never experienced anything like what has been going on but I am just relaying a message. So please do your best to check your biases, educate yourself and those around you, find ways to help, and spread the message.
Also, just a friendly reminder, the BLM movement is not over. Innocent people are still being murdered. Just recently Daunte Wright was shot and killed. Along with him, so many other innocent black people have been killed.
So please do your part.
