I think you should have killed Maria as yet reason be is the story is interesting and the way you would have end it still show that their story is not completely unfolding so taking away one of the main characters at the climax will only lef the story unresolved take for example you did write eliminating quickfoot in the original but you bring him back because the story was yet to unfold
