When she was filling notebooks with anime-inspired fanfiction before bed, Denny could never have imagined that she would one day write a story that would make her a celebrity. From being the most-followed person on Wattpad, with millions of reads, a bestselling book, and a film deal, it’s hard to think that Denny could have written herself into a better story.
Denny got her start the same way that a number of writers on Wattpad do: through reaching the end of a story but not wanting it to be over. With her, it was an anime that she watched as a child, and its final episode inspired her to continue the story with her own words.
Denny discovered fanfiction by doing it: imagining extensions to the story before bed each night and scribbling them down into notebooks.
Where the story of one girl writing fanfiction becomes remarkable is when she goes on to write her own stories, and those stories are embraced by a nation.
When Denny began publishing her own stories on Wattpad, they proved to be explosively successful. Her most well-known work, Diary ng Panget (Diary of an Ugly Girl) has more than 16 Million reads on Wattpad. It was recently published in book form in the Philippines, and it went on to become the best-selling book there this year.
Denny’s story is so well loved that a local studio even approached her to start work on a film adaptation.
Despite her stardom, what Denny truly prizes is the impact Wattpad allows her to have on the lives of others.
“Wattpad helped me find what I really want to do in life, and that is to write and inspire people.”
And she continues to do just that, inspiring her hundreds of thousands of followers (the largest following of any user) through the millions of reads she has amassed on the stories she publishes on Wattpad. To read Denny’s work, visit her Wattpad profile.
