Tara Well has been mute all her life. She can hear, but not speak. She is forced to listen, but never respond. Doctors have tried to help her, but nothing can be done. Tara will be silent forever.
Enter Matthew Welsh. He is easily the loudest, most daring boy at Tara's new high school. He is the only who truly notices Tara. Trying to help her, he will talk to her for hours, despite ridicule from his friends. Tara somehow grows to like the strange boy, and a new and exciting friendship is formed.
