Spanning decades and narrated through the reflective lens of Jake, a Vietnam vet turned songwriter, professor, and eco-visionary, this novel is both a personal odyssey and a bold manifesto for a reimagined America. While its length-over 60 chapters-might daunt some readers, its heart lies in its earnest attempt to blend the intimate with the epic, making it a standout, if imperfect, addition to contemporary fiction.
The story follows Jake as he navigates a multifaceted life, from flying Phantom jets over Vietnam to crafting songs that resonate across generations, to founding ZOX, a revolutionary eco-development company with his partner Margaret. The narrative crescendos with Jake's improbable run for president as a third-party candidate in 2025, self-funded by liquidating ZOX's assets, driven by a pledge to serve a single term and push for sustainability and community-centric policies like a Value Added Tax (VAT). Westbrook's prose shines in its vivid recounting of Jake's past-dogfights in the sky, quiet moments strumming a guitar, and the tactile joy of building sustainable communities-grounding the reader in a character who feels both larger-than-life and deeply human.
Where the novel excels is in its portrayal of Jake's evolution and the grassroots movement he inspires. Scenes like the repurposing of an abandoned mall into an eco-village or the final rally in Michigan are rendered with a painterly eye, evoking hope and possibility. The supporting cast-Margaret, the strategic mastermind; Sarah, Jake's emotional anchor; and a chorus of volunteers and veterans-add depth, their voices amplifying the campaign's ethos of service over power.
