alone time with clary was a rarity lately. jace was an outcast at the institute; he was being forced to stay with magnus bane, made all the more awkward from the way magnus tended to mentally undress jace's parabatai. in front of him. shamelessly. when alec had come to visit one evening (to discuss "important nephilim business," apparently, which jace presumed involved tongues), jace couldn't resist sneaking out of the loft and heading to clary's. wherever she was, he was drawn to, against all odds -- even more so after the incident with her little mundane. bloodsucker now. he didn't bother knocking, instead using a rune to gain access to the frays' house -- though he did hesitate when he reached clary's bedroom, knuckles rapping against the shut door.

jace had visited jocelyn only once. it had been per clary's request, and he had felt significantly worse afterwards. just seeing the woman who never bothered to search for him, never bothered to make sure that valentine had not tricked her, filled him with a bitterness that seemed unwilling to ever leave. he narrowed his eyes. "your mother, clarissa. haven't we had this discussion before? as scintillating as it was last time, i think i may pass." he raised his eyebrows. "what? little sister? that's what you are, aren't you? my sister." the words tasted acidic.

jace's gaze skimmed over the drawing, taking in the intricate detail of her sketching pattern. he had always wanted to watch clary draw. be allowed to, at least. observe the little crease in her forehead, the way she'd bit her lower lip when she was concentrating doubly hard, how she would cry out in frustration over a severe mistake and somehow manage to make the smaller errors work. he'd only caught glimpses before, but it was addictive; everything about her presence was. something was genuinely wrong with him. "our situation? you're my only family left, little sister. no home with the darling lightwoods', father is a sociopath on the run, and / your / mother--" / not mine. / even if they did share blood. "--is comatose."
