i've been seeing this more and more and it's been disturbing so, i wanted to say, cannibalism and religious horror for the sake of an aesthetic and unwarranted gore are NOT things that make literature. fics like that are not cool. romanticising mental illness and explicit gore and/or cannibalism, and mistreating the former, is sick. @daemos_ just made an announcement about it which i think everyone should read

@daemos_ absolutely! i’ve written my fair share of horror fics with gore and other heavy themes too, but i always try to be intentional about how they’re handled. for me, those elements function more as a cautionary lens than as something meant to be indulged in purely for entertainment, and i make that message very clear in the writing. another big issue i have (especially with a lot of afs i see here) is the constant use of underage characters. that’s always felt deeply inappropriate to me. so many of these plots could easily work with characters who are of age, which would immediately make the gore, sex, and other heavy material more appropriate and clearly aimed at an adult audience. instead, they’re often centered on minors, which feels careless at best and harmful at worst, especially since younger readers are more impressionable and more likely to misinterpret or internalize these portrayals. the high school setting in particular really baffles me. if writers want an academic backdrop, college is right there and would solve so many of these issues. as it stands, it just feels strange, unnecessary, and very mishandled overall.
