ao3 is as equally ai-dense and purple in prose as wattpad is and there hasn’t been a difference in writing quality between either site for at least six years if ever, and yet everyone on there is under some collective delusion that it’s the last remaining safe haven for true intellectual writers (hobbyists, actually) who have moved up the rungs of the fic-publishing ladder to the highest caliber of platforms. and i think that would be kind of hilarious if they weren’t so bizarrely exclusionary to people moving to ao3 in exactly the way they once did (and repeatedly insist is a necessary pre-requisite to Deserve a place there in the first place). for a non-algorithmic website designed for free works to flourish at any writing level, it’s attracted a fascinating abundance of people with superiority complexes and severe entitlement. odd stuff happening in fandom
i am like you in that i enjoy both sites and think each of them have strengths/weaknesses but man do they create such a hostile environment over there, they are so unwelcoming to newcomers and believe they’re above everyone else because they have a fancy tagging system (which is great!) but the writing there is no better than it is here. i’ve read insane fics on both sites and horrible fics on both sites, however it seems that you’re only allowed to say ao3 is great and wattpad sucks (i saw a tweet saying the best fic here isn’t better than the worst fic there….) and it makes me sad for new writers who want to begin there. i prefer this platform because i find the people nicer and i like that they embrace original characters in a way ao3 doesn’t, but i think at the end of the day everyone needs to realize we are all writing fanfiction
