Yesterday, I woke up to hearing about Roe v Wade being overturned. I wasn't too surprised because I live in America. This country has an extensive history of oppressing anyone who isn't a white male.
As a person with a uterus, the fact that abortions can now be banned is terrifying. I can't imagine what I would do if I were assaulted and forced to give birth to a child I definitely don't want. It would literally ruin my entire life. I am lucky because I live in a state that will most likely keep abortions legal. But many others aren't as fortunate.
The US doesn't have free healthcare, free childcare, or paid family leave. Raising a child in this country is a challenge. Forcing a person who isn't financially or mentally stable enough to raise one is even worse. There are alternative laws with safer solutions than banning abortions. For example, making contraception (birth control, condoms) free. Or, even better, making ACCURATE sex-ed a REQUIRED class in school. Because it isn't required in all fifty states.
The overturning of Roe v Wade is a step in the worst direction possible. As Justice Clarence Thomas said, “In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell." (Washington Post) Those were cases regarding contraception, same-sex intimate relationships, and gay marriage. All three of these may be banned in the future. It won't be shocking to find reports of increased protesting and riots in the future.
I hope we can revoke this ban. I hope our voices as US citizens will be heard. I hope that one day, we won't be controlled by a bunch of old white men who act like they know everything. Whose actions don't affect them, but affect us, the common people. For now, all I can do is hope.
Sorry for the rant yall. It's just a really shitty situation. I can't help but be angry.
