Veteran's Day- the day in which Americans celebrate, honor and appreciate those living and dead who have answered the call to fight for our freedoms. I went to a program today that asked each veteran attending to stand as they called out their name, branch of service, and how long they served. Some stood tall and regal, emulating exactly what you'd expect a hero to look like; others were wrinkled and weak, barely able to support themselves long enough before plopping back in their seats.
These brave men and women fought for my country in hopes that the next generations would never need to, but their gray hair and weathered skin reminded me that they're human. These heroes are human. Humans who have cried tears, cracked jokes, felt fear, and many have lived long, long lives. They're survivors. It's kind of inspiring, to say the least. Sometimes I forget what they've done for me and my country, because they tend to blend in. They're farmers, teachers, parents, and grandparents, too.
Which is why I don't want to turn my attention away from today. America is far from from perfect, but even with all its faults, it has become my home. Seeing over 20 veterans that I personally knew being appreciated, seeing people proudly standing for the presentation of colors, seeing people wipe away tears as we sang My Country Tis of Thee, God Bless the USA, America the Beautiful, and I Hear America Singing (me included), and seeing everyone clap for those who stood once their military service song came up in Armed Forces on Parade... the whole deal was pretty bittersweet. But my main point is: veterans, thank you.
Truly, God bless America.
