i’d just like to go on a rant really quick: i commend anna todd. writing a trilogy of fan fiction can be extremely difficult. and i’ll admit, it’s what brought me to wattpad in the first place. i got into the first book, and it got me hooked. i ended up reading all three after books in the span of two weeks, absolutely obsessed with what i thought was good literature. and it was, good literature that is. good literature doesn’t always mean good characters and good scenarios. withering heights focuses on a emotionally abusive relationship, twilight does as well. but still, readers eat that shit up, because it’s written well.

what i don’t condone is how anna todd added yet another book to the best sellers list on how women need to be emotionally possessed by abusive men. it’s the same ‘stick by your man’ mentality that makes domestic violence seem erotic to impressionable young readers. and to perpetuate that mentality by making it into a movie, that’s just spurring on the idea to even more teenagers who don’t like to read.

to be honest, even seeing the after trailer or the books in my archive makes me shiver. but anna todd became what she wanted to be for it, a name known to all for being a best seller. even if she is selling a misogynist view of love.
