Hey! This is beyond late but hopefully you will still find any pointers helpful!
To start with; Posting stories.
- When posting a story, I always found that if you have a certain plot in mind for a book you want to read, but can't find one that satisfies your wants, write it yourself! It means the story would be entirely yours, and it would more than likely fall together much easier as you'd been thinking about it for a while.
- When it comes to criticism, take it on the chin. If you want to write and post a story, do it! Sometimes stories take a while to fall into place, so don't let the naysayers or the haters put you off!
- Relax. It is possibly the most important point, and if you're stressing about a story plot, or even something as simple as a characters name, it more than likely won't happen. Relaxing, taking time away from that stress bubble, is key. Don't let your world revolve so entirely around something that the stress from that effects your personal life, because that isn't good. For you or for the story.
For reading:
- Find a story/author YOU like. Who cares whether their stories are in the top 100 or not? If you like their writing style, and think their story has a good plot, then you read it!
- If you're reading a story and begin to notice some grammar mistakes or spelling mistakes, or even continuity errors, be NICE when pointing them out. No one appreciates people who are cruel when pointing out how wrong you are, so take that saying 'talk to people how you would like to be talked to' and out it into practise! Trust me, authors really appreciate it when mistakes are pointed out to them!
I really hope this helped, even if it is over a year late(my bad, sorry!)
