             ⠀⠀⠀⠀ the information that he learns does not surprise him, it makes sense. he hadn’t been told every bit of information about sebastian’s past, which is totally fine with him, but he had picked up some pieces. the family photo, but he’d never met his family—- it was quite tragic, and the shadow man had told him never to bring it up unless sebastian did. it would be considered rude.
             ⠀⠀⠀⠀ when sebastian leans his head on nick’s shoulder, nick inhales sharply. he does not move to wrap his arm around his shoulders. instead, he asks—- and clark answers. a veil of shadows produces from nicholas’ back, and moves tenderly to wrap around sebastian. it acts as a blanket, enveloping him enough to leave sebastian’s head uncovered, but for the first time ever, it does not consume. instead, it comforts—- or, it tries to. clark isn’t good at that with other people. OKAY, NOW WHO’S BEING RUDE?
             ⠀⠀⠀⠀ “do you know for sure that she is gone?”  the shadows speak this time, no longer using nick as his voice—- and it’s about damn time. nick, however, moves his hand to grasp onto sebastian’s. nick does not seek answers, and he wants sebby to know that.  “you don’t have to answer him if you don’t want to.”

⠀ ⠀ sebastian hears and smells nicholas before he seems him,  and for the first time in days,  feel feels his chest loosen just slightly.  the familiar footsteps and scent put him to ease,  even in its just the slightest.  it’s still a reminder he’s not completely alone. 
            ⠀ ⠀ he glances at him,  the sight becoming blurry with tears as he turns to the photo again.  “  lettie,  ”  he croaks,  voice thick and quivering.  god,  he was pathetic,  on the floor and a mess,  and still nicholas was there.  “  charlotte.  my little sister.  ”
            ⠀ ⠀ the words are heavy on his heart,  suffocating him.  he leans his head,  resting it on the others shoulder so he doesn’t see the tears that fall.

             ⠀⠀⠀⠀ nicholas had been to sebastian’s apartment only once before, but it had been kept spotless save for the several sketches that were still featured around the place. however, the condition of his apartment didn’t matter when the man he deeply cared for (ITS OKAY TO SAY LOVE) was sitting in the middle of it, on the ground, looking like he hadn’t slept in quite a few days.
             ⠀⠀⠀⠀ nicholas’ footsteps are quiet and careful as he maneuvers his way to the center, to /him/, and he kneels down beside him. the look on his face, the grime in his hair despite the jasmine smell, the way his eyes look exactly like his did once upon a time. he /knows/ what it feels like, which is why his blue hues flicker to the photo he looks at.  “who is she?”  he asks after a brief moment, his hands resting on the floor. he does not know if touch will help or hurt him, so he’s careful. he doesn’t push a potential boundary.

             ⠀⠀⠀⠀ [the warmth that bubbles in his chest is probably enough to burn a hole right through him, but he’s happy about it—- he smiles, because it’s /nice/. it’s what he needs, after the freaking two months of working every damn day for his brother who couldn’t bother to open up the goddamn door for him. although, nicky could have just popped in there despite that.]  i named him after superman… cause, you know, he saved my life when i was five years old. he likes to tell that story a lot, you’ll hear it one day and you’ll understand.

[  he drags his hands along nicholas’ back slowly,  rubbing small circles along his shoulder.  he lets out the breath he didn’t know he was holding,  planting a soft kiss to his head.  ]  that’s good,  i’m glad he’s doing better,  and he has someone that helps him.  and good,  you better be taking care of  —  [  he cuts himself off,  also looking at him,  eyebrow raised.  he wasn’t lying,  he could tell from his heartbeat and overall,  nicholas — ness.  ]  you named him  / clark /  ?

             ⠀⠀⠀⠀ [the pull into sebastian’s chest catches nick off guard, but he doesn’t object. in fact, he almost melts into the hug, wrapping his arms around sebastian and closing his eyes. oddly enough, there was nowhere he’d rather be than here.. and that includes with his own mother. (OH, I AM SOOOO TELLING HER YOU FEEL THAT WAY.) okay, this isn’t the time for that.]  theo’s fine, he came back to work and looks a hell of a lot better.. and has been spending a lot of time with his girlfriend, who makes a lot of meals for him.  (..)  yes, i’ve been taking care of myself. clark has definitely been helping, albeit very aggressively.  [he moves to whip his head back and look at sebastian.]  that’s his name now, i’m not spending time with another boy. i promise.

THE SHADOW REALM;
                 —  it is a realm that he created at a young age that became his safe space. he often travels to this realm when things get increasingly difficult for him to handle, as he easily becomes unstable.
                 —  the shadow realm is actually sentient, and it chooses to protect nicholas and the people in his life. nicholas does not know the sentience of the shadow realm, he just thinks it’s voice is in his head, not his pocket realm.
                 —  throughout the years, nicholas’ mind has traveled to the shadow realm, leaving his body vulnerable to attack and injury. when in this state, nicholas’ body produces large shadows that move like mist. anyone can enter in this state, but it is incredibly difficult to leave it without nicholas himself.
                 —  the shadow realm does not need sustenance, but it’s keeper does; therefore the shadow realm will do what it must to make sure nicholas takes proper care of himself (eating, drinking, sleeping).
                 —  when people are forced into the shadow realm, whether by nicholas’ choice or the realm’s, the shadow realm makes the victim insane. because while nicky sees a diner that he used to go to, everyone sees something different but (seemingly) harmless. this seemingly harmless vision is an illusion, a never-ending loop that drives them mad.
                 —  he is very protective of the shadow realm, and never lets anyone see it until they are close. of course, this excludes the moments where the shadow realm seeps out of him when he is mentally there, because that is out of his control.

BASICS;
                 —  theodore && lilian hayes are nick’s older siblings. they raised him after their mother died when nick was just three years old.
                 —  while theo and lili have nice powers, nick’s aren’t so nice. his powers manifest as shadows, but it is so much more. he has access to the “shadow realm,” a realm that he created when he was very young. it has become his safe space, and he will often go there when things get incredibly difficult.
                 —  he travels through the shadows / darkness, but usually only when he panics. he likes to remain level-headed because of this fact, as he doesn’t want to just disappear and reappear somewhere entirely new.
                 —  when he was younger, his powers used to cause him great physical pain. he would scream and cry, going between the shadow realm and the real world. not always would he appear at the same place that he left, which would cause great distress to theo and lili.
                 —  his mother-figure is edena fraiser, with whom he lives with. not only does she help him control his powers, she loves him like he imagines a mother would. he even calls her his mother.
                 —  he picks up shifts at edena’s bar, usually on the slow nights or when his siblings can’t work.
                 —  he struggles with suicidal thoughts, as he feels empty inside and views that he’s a “monster.” he does not know if this will change, but he is trying to find things that he enjoys.
