Hello, everyone! I'm Vivian Yang, aka "Shanghai Girl", so named after my debut novel. Publishers Weekly’s review describes my latest novel "Memoirs of a Eurasian" as “an engaging exploration of a world unknown to most Westerners... Readers will find this fascinating novel very enjoyable and readable.” Of novel "Shanghai Girl", JADE Magazine writes: “From the streets of old Shanghai to a feast of monkey brains, Yang scripts scenarios that readers may otherwise never experience for themselves.” I was born and raised in Shanghai where I taught English and journalism in a university in my early twenties in the mid-1980s. I write passionately about Shanghai, drawing on first-hand experiences, knowledge, and insight that only a native can possess.

I was the Fiction alum of the 2010 New York Foundation for the Arts’ Immigrant Artists Project, a top winner of The 2007 WNYC Leonard Lopate Essay Contest,a Woolrich Writing Fund Scholar and a Writing Program Scholar at Columbia University where I studied creative writing, a Tuition Scholar of the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, and a Literature Fellow of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. In addition to being an author and former university lecturer, I also worked as a broadcast and print journalist, an on-stage bilingual M.C. and simultaneous interpreter, a television and cable network guest commentator and interviewee, a public speaker, a Wall Street and Madison Avenue professional, and a Mandarin Chinese instructor to corporate clients in the U.S. and Asia.
