from there things got .. better. his home life was no better , his body still ached from welts and bruises .. but she was there. a sun in his abyss. a guiding hand to lead him in the right direction.

then she got pregnant. they were young — clearly irresponsible. but for some reason , neither of them could bear the thought of losing their child.

and then things were perfect. he had moved out to live with his true family — he had been happy.

the sheriff went crazy. the man has always had a few loose screws , but he had been good enough at his job. no one had questioned him much. that was until he was plunging the knife into his first victim.

and donte had asked if she'd go to the store alone , if he could stay in because of his late night before. she had agreed with little hassle , merely teasing him before leaving.

“what would you do without me?” a question he could brush off before.

then , he was standing in front of her grave , and the question was real. he didn't know what to do , how to live without her. it felt like his paths were twisting back to what they once were , dark and vile .. unwanted.

then a little girl tugs on his shirt , just barely two at the time , and smiles. because she doesn't truly know what's going on. both a blessing and a curse , that was.

don had no time to spiral. he refused to become like his parents. he refused to give his daughter anything but the best.

he would live , if only to make her happy.

donte was born with chains — wrapped against his hands and legs , bounding him to a life he never asked for. a life he was unfortunate enough to be born into.

his parents weren't famous , not truly , but they were known in the town they lived in. a town doctor who was known as kind and sweet. his mother — adored by all.

if he uttered a word about how she starved him for days , beat him black and blue — no one would bat an eye. they would think him to be crazy. more likely to assume that he did something.

then there was his father. his drunkard father who couldn't get over the fact that he never achieved his dream. a father who forced that dream on to his son — because if he couldn't have it , he'd make damn sure his family name did.

his father was a coach at the highschool. most stayed away if they could. it didn't take a genius to figure out that he drank his body weight in alcohol daily. others were comfortable around him , seeing the nice persona he put on for the public.

but he knew. donte knew that their loving smiles were cruel and their airy laughs were sinister. knew the truth behind their layers and layers and fabricated lies.

things got bad. to the point that his mother had no need to raise her own fist at him — he was doing plenty of harm to himself.

everything in his life seemed like a crude fate of chance. something he still resonated with as he stared down at the pavement , dozens of stories away.

fate had other plants though. amelia was a kind girl. someone who smiled without any hidden intentions. a person who didn't pretend and lie — merely stated things as it was.

some found her harsh and blunt. don had always thought she was a breath of fresh air.

the coincidence — fate , of her showing up on that roof altered his life. she coaxed him off , took him inside , and sat with him until he could remember his own existence.
