           rowan didn't step back .
but he didn't step closer either .
his curious eyes searched the stranger's face .
as though he already knew the answer was important .

do this, do that, go up, go down. i’m a nurse damn it! my job is to keep people alive, not to run errands.

[the romanian woman mumbled to herself, as she washed a white piece of linen by hand. she wanted to use her powers, but she couldn’t. she wasn’t in her coven anymore, she wasn’t in her coven a long time ago.]

i’m not doing this anymore. this isn’t what i accepted.

[frida’s hands went still, the white linen forgotten in the tin bassinet filled with water. amara was right. if frida left the nurses, she would be out on the streets again. here at least she had fresh bread and a bed that wasn’t shared with the rats.]

            i don’t hate helping people.

[she mumbled, her hands moving again, now more aggressive, her knuckles going from pink to red. only when saw the water turning crimson she stopped. throwing the white linen in another bassinet and the water outside on the cold ground with one swift move.]

i won’t leave. but tell the other nurses to stop making me their errand girl. i may be fresh meat, but i’m not stupid.

*dr. amara stifles a laugh. there is something strangely intriguing about the woman. she can’t place her accent, nor the country she comes from, but the way she moves around the room is familiar. practiced.. almost as though medicine was not entirely foreign to her. unfolding her arms, amara crosses the room and comes to stand beside her.* hey, you’re free to walk out. the corner of her mouth lifts into a faint smile. but you’ll miss out on free food, a decent bed… and someone to keep an eye on you in case you decide to collapse from sheer stubbornness.
