Rexheart awoke, blinking her green eyes sleepily. She slowly rose to her feet, yawning. She stretched her back, her brown fur shone in the morning sun. She softly padded out of the den, careful not to tread on any cat’s tail as she did so. The first thing she wanted to do was visit Skyfire, who had been made deputy the previous day. Rexheart spotted the ginger tabby over by her den, happily eating a vole. Rexheart broke into a run. She skidded to a halt, almost crashing into her sister. “Hi Skyfire!” Rexheart greeted. Skyfire gave her a questioning look.
“What is so important that you had to almost crash into me?” Skyfire snapped, trying to be as stern as possible but the amusement showed through her glowering gaze. “Plus, you stepped on my breakfast.” Skyfire huffed. Rexheart lifted her dark brown paws to see the smashed vole. Rexheart stepped back, curling her tail around her paws.
“Hehe, sorry about that.” Rexheart sweat dropped. Skyfire waved her tail, dismissing the topic.
“Anyway, you never answered my question.” Skyfire said. Rexheart dipped her head in respect for the deputy.
“I wanted to congratulate you on becoming deputy.” Rexheart replied shortly. Skyfire smiled.
“Thank you Rex.” Skyfire mewed, using Rexheart’s birth name. “You want to go hunting?” Skyfire added. Rexheart’s face lit up.
“Yeah!” Rexheart replied, lashing her tail in excitement. Skyfire ushered the younger warrior to the exit of camp. Rexheart felt so free, the cold wind against her face, blowing her striped tail back. She smelled mouse, and followed the scent. It brought to a cave; wait… is that other scent… FOX! Fear pulsed through her, panic setting in.
