More arrows dart from behind me, fixed in the direction of the sea creature as he smothers the fire and prepares to attack again. He roars in irritation at being stopped again, and I take advantage of his weak moment by giving him another wave of fire to deal with. This time he falls weakly as his body turns from living and fighting to being fuel. The rat isn’t even focused on me anymore as he kicks and screams at the engulfing heat. His shrieks send chills down my spine.
Something grabs my neck and jerks me off the ground. Struggling for breath, I come face to face with the reptile. Scorching brightness left from the corpses reflects off his glassy black eyes. His deafening roar blows hot wind with sticky saliva into my face. Gasping, I open my right hand toward him—the flames hit, then dissolve uselessly into smoke. He grins with yellow unbrushed fangs and grips my neck harder, cutting off what air I had left.
First thing I wonder is why he's not killing me. The obvious answer: he wants it to be slow.
