 I chose to make the s/o in the fic a female and not just gender neutral was because of a personal headcanon of mine was that in the only real "relationship" Gilbert had ever been in beforehand was with Friedrich ii of Prussia (Old Fritz)  I wanted to really show him  being forced to address his bisexuality, albeit not yet!! It'll come!!! And his demiromanticizm!! It'll come!! And the whole busty+chub thing was in accordance to how he values body heat (uh and cute soft stuff duhh) as for thiccness? The boy said it himself, he like a nice booty wit the big thighs , all I'm really saying is that my version of Gilbert is not like most other versions of him  on this site, he's very very psychological and pretty unreliable as a narrator, expecially when talking about himself, so having the story told through his perspective is kind of hard, because we get to see his thoughts, but he's never 100% honest with himself, he has his way of thinking, and he is not perfect, he is not as chivalrous as he makes himself out to be, and he tries hard to keep his mindset without offending anyone or spilling out his identity. Gilbert is very awkward in romantic situations. Unless he feels real intimacy, he's very awkward in sexual situations as well. He doesn't mean to offend anyone,,, he just thinks he's better than you and learning the hard way  he's not ;)

Gilbert thinks Nationfolk are an advanced species compared to humans (which explains the whole "I'm awesome" thing blah blah blah) but this also means hes got this toxic mindset that Nationfolk (or at a minimum, himself) are immune to mental illnesses like PTSD or depression, both of which he has, and denies it. This makes the whole mental illness  discussion a very touchy subject for him. He grew up believing Nationfolk we're meant to have no true feeling, so in that case falling in love with anyone much less a human would really fuck him up. That's the whole reason I started writing the fic (that and some personal reasons) the premise of the book is Gilbert and this rather large book of collected diary entries, notes, poems, letters, and sketchy doodles all revolving around him, and his lover, and how he deals with falling in love,
