I hear the horror, the rising panic laced in his voice even as he falters. I look away, unable to look straight into those piercingly blue eyes. This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, and both he and I know this fact far too well.
‘You’re joking, right?’ he says, probably not in an attempt to make light of this situation but to convince himself to believe I was indeed lying. He lets out a shaky laugh. ‘Right?’ I stay silent, bracing myself. ‘Right?!’
The hitch in his voice, like he’s about to cry, the way it sounded more like a plead for a ‘yes’ in response than a question, it shatters my heart. Again, I’ve broke him. Again, I’d shown just how irresponsible I can be.
I force myself to meet his gaze, swallowing down the urge to simply drop on my knees and beg for forgiveness.
