Hera rarely allowed others into her private gardens. Yet somehow, Persephone always felt like an exception. She found her standing among the roses in thoughtful silence. For once, Hera didn’t interrupt immediately. When she finally spoke, her voice was softer.
          
          “My flowers seem to like you” a pause her brow lifted faintly “they’re usually far more selective.”

            Hera’s gaze lingered on Persephone for a moment longer before shifting back toward the garden around them. Peaceful. It was an interesting choice of word. Most viewed her gardens as beautiful, yes—but peace was rarely the first thing associated with anything belonging to Hera. Reverence, perhaps. Intimidation, often. Fear, if one was honest enough.
            
            Her hand brushed lightly against the petals of a nearby rose, the bloom leaning into her touch before settling once more “it was not always peaceful,” she admitted quietly a rare truth offered without embellishment.
            
            “There was a time this garden reflected me far more honestly.” A slight pause. “Wild things tend to grow strangely when anger is left unattended for centuries” her gaze shifted back toward Persephone, thoughtful now “and yet…” her lips curved faintly. “You seem to make everything around you gentler.”
            
            Not quite praise. Not quite accusation. Merely observation.

            Persephone gave a small smile as she was admiring the many flowers in the garden. She looked over and nodded, “that they do. I do appreciate you letting me into your private garden. It’s very peaceful here.”

He did not raise his voice. He rarely needed to. But something about Persephone’s presence made even silence feel different. Zeus studied her for a long moment before speaking.
          
          “Do you ever feel like you chose this life…” a pause “…or were simply placed into it and decided to make it work?”

            Persephone stood there calmly, her hands held together in front of her as she thinks a bit. To hear such a question from Zeus was rather surprising but it was a good one. 
            
            “That is a loaded question coming from you. But I suppose it depends on how you feel about it. I don’t think any of us really choose how things happen. But we do have an option to make a choice.”
