Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, 1818, is very well known. Many people know about her novel and how impressive its importance to the horror genre is, especially considering her age when she wrote it. However, not everyone picks up on how rooted in feminism the story is since the story’s characters are predominantly male, (and the female characters present mostly existing to aid and comfort their male counterparts) but some of the examples are very obvious once you take a closer look. All the deaths in the story are all caused by Victor and his essential flaw: thinking so highly of himself that he believes he can completely overturn nature’s way of life. Dr. Frankenstein plays God, or woman, in an attempt of achieving something that would make people see him as superior. After examining Mary Shelley’s novel and what was happening around her at the time, it’s impossible not to understand how the book is a feminist critique of stigmatized female sexuality and motherhood. Why does it matter? Giving context helps readers fully understand all aspects of the story, while also providing more to discuss and think about.
