@TheAddieDragon At the sound of the warning bell, Laurel grabbed his sleeve and tugged him gently in one direction. “Come on, I’ll show you where the band room is.”
She wouldn’t be around long. At this rate, Iris could lose her as soon as next week. Whatever ended up driving everyone away would drive her away too, and she’d be like everyone else- doing everything in her power to sit as far from him as possible. Maybe even goes as far as to spread the news that he’d done whatever he’d done, and that everyone should stay away from him. That had happened on the second… no, maybe it was the third time. Most of the time, people were nice enough to just leave him be and not ruin his reputation, but that second or third time, that group of friends had thought it best to ‘warn’ everyone about him. Warn everyone about what, though? Iris never found out what the rumors were about, so he never understood what was wrong.
Because no matter how many times this happened again and again, no former friends or psychologists would tell him what he was doing wrong. His parents had no problem pointing out any flaws he had, so what made it so difficult for these people to do the same? He couldn’t learn from his mistakes if he didn’t know what his mistakes were, right?
“So, this is the band room!” Laurel pushed open the door and showed Iris inside. It looked like any other typical high school band room. Iris could have pretty easily mistaken it for any of the other band rooms he’d been to.
“It’s really cool,” he said, not wanting to rain on Laurel’s parade.
She smiled before pointing over towards one side of the room. “Here, I’ll show you where the flutes typically sit. There’s a couple of things you need to know first, though…”
Iris spaced out as Laurel began to tell him all about the band- who to avoid, who she hung out with, who he’d get along with…
But to him, these were just more people he would inevitably let down.
