they molt piecemeal in patches instead of all at once. the shed shell is usually pretty sturdy but honestly they'll just eat it for the remaining nutrients and also because molting takes energy. of course vessels have mouths how else would they eat. it's under their masks, like every civilized bug. they don't eat through their *eyes*. those are for storage.
they grow big and strong if they eat a lot and get a lot of exercise and also if they spend time soaking in water with sunlight. i think a big watery broth of delicious nutrients makes a good bath for a growing vessel. their masks are light enough theyre naturally buoyant you can just toss one in to a delicious Dirt Soup and shine a sun lamp on them do this an hour a day and theyll molt in no time
