Hey Everyone! Hope you all are happy and healthy. It has been ages since I last interacted here with anyone.
So exactly 10 months ago I left my job as an editor because honestly speaking the kind of manuscripts I was reviewing were cliche. Seeing the junk on my desk everyday with the same storylines was a nightmare. That's when I decided that if this shit is getting published somehow then I may as well have a fair shot at publishing if I give an honest attempt. Lol because no idea came to my mind for the first 2 months. Imagine the horror! Then something came up and I wrote a couple of thousand words. Nothing for the next 4 months. Painful? Yes. Then suddenly one day I realised that months have gone by. Panic? To the max!!!
After sleepless nights and multiple crying sessions, while trying to wrap my head around this creative journey which i undertook with no forceable result in my mind, I have finished the first draft. There's still a long way to go because now I have to edit the whole thing which in itself is a bigger task. But I'm proud of myself. I always wanted to finish a proper manuscript for an original story and I did it. Like wtf I actually did it...
Just wanted to share this here because some of your feedbacks have always been so kind and motivating on my previous works ❤️

Hey! Hope everyone is doing well. Recently I read a book by Joan Didion (Slouching Towards Bethlehem) and there was an essay On Self-Respect. The whole thing made me question that in a world where either people are too modest or it is deemed as "cool to crack self-deprecating jokes" about our insecurities, where does the line of self respect lies?
Excerpt from the essay -
"To do without self-respect, on the other hand, is to be an unwilling audience of one to an interminable documentary that details one's failings, both real and imagined, with fresh footage spliced in for every screening. (...) To live without self-respect is to lie awake some night, beyond the reach of warm milk, phenobarbital, and the sleeping hand on the coverlet, counting up the sins of commission and omission, the trusts betrayed, the promises subtly broken, the gifts irrevocably wasted through sloth or cowardice or carelessness. However long we postpone it, we eventually lie down alone in that notoriously uncomfortable bed, the one we make ourselves. Whether or not we sleep in it depends, of course, on whether or not we respect ourselves."
It is important to take responsibility for one's actions and accept the consequences. This is what builds a character. In hindsight, the character of Detective Jeon (one of my books) is a true embodiment of preserving one's self respect at all times and I feel like this is why it's one such protagonist which no matter how hard I tried to recreate again I just couldn't. Maybe I should just make book 3 in the series lol (Just a thought!)

@tbr_tales YES, YOU SHOULD! I’m eagerly waiting for your come back. And yes, I do wonder where the line of self-respect lies. I believe in some cases, people mistake self-respect for selfishness and selfishness for self respect. I don’t understand the concept of self-respect. What are the things you can do under the name of self-respect isn’t clear to me, so I would love to research more about it though. Thank you for bringing this up.

@kookie-eater awe, glad to hear that. Though don't get distracted by the name of this particular short stories collection. Carver is known for his dry blunt realism and he showed the more ugly/non-conventional side of love. Still important I feel because loving someone is not always hearts and flowers.

"There was this funny thing of anything could happen now that we realized everything had."
~ Raymond Carver, Gazebo (What we talk about when we talk about love, short stories collection)
What a delight it is yo re-read one of my favourite authors!
