Here is a more in depth summary of "The Writer's Block": Kaelyn McAndrew leads the “perfect” American teenager life. She has an adoring and romantic boyfriend, Nolan. Her best friend, Belle, is the most popular girl at East Mont. Kaelyn comes from a relatively wealthy family. Her parents practically worship her, and the ground she walks on. Things couldn’t get better between with her and her sister, Sadie, who is in college. And on top of all of that, Kaelyn is a skilled writer. By the age of 16, she has published three novels, one of which is nominated for Thomson Medal. That is the most prestigious and well-known award there is for authors across the world.
But when Sadie gets in to a car accident, and awakes from a four day coma, Kaelyn and her parents have to face a new reality: Sadie now has permanent Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), leaving her sister to have severe impaired speech, and no movement in her legs. Meaning Sadie can never again live on her own.
As if it wasn’t enough for her family to go through, they’re falling behind on their income as a result of the accident, catapulting Kaelyn in to getting an after school job at the local diner, where everybody eats at. All motivation for writing is lost, creating problems at school and at home. Not to mention, things aren’t going so great with her boyfriend or best friend either.
Maybe it’s not the end of the world, because somewhere, deep down, Kaelyn knows that the same Sadie is in there. And she is not giving up. With the help of the some-what cute diner boy and her new neighbor, she can make through this crisis.
Through her journey, Kaelyn realizes there is more to life than what’s on paper. She just has to find it.
