it had been a close game, the game heading into overtime before the capitals pulled ahead with one point. they’d fought quite valiantly, in all honesty. he hadn’t clashed much with william, only once or twice in a pinch, but he had sensed the tensity, even on the ice. it was about twenty minutes past the end of the game, and with his red duffel over his shoulder, exposed this time with a muscle - style capitals tee. emmett hoped he could still catch cleary before they left, which luckily, he did, seeing the captain’s figure in the hallway. approaching, he tried to sound genuinely neutral. “nice game, cleary.”

he doesn’t need to finish his sentence, for emmett can get a gist of what it was going to be. “back at you.”

“don’t be surprised if i—” he wants to say kiss you again, but grimaces in faint embarrassment, but there’s a small genuine grin. “it’s a date, captain.”
