I posted some bizarre comments about cultural appropriation a while back on here. Maybe 1-2 years ago. No one's ever approached me about it, but I've been attempting to find the comments now to apologize to the people I hurt. I've never been able to, so I'm posting it here.
I was misinformed about what it was, being influenced by some right-wing people who straw manned the opinions of people who fought against CA.
I had, with some level of disrespect, commented that I didn't believe in it when it was mentioned in a story I read. Some people very aggressively told me I was wrong, which only made me hold steadfast to what I said.
After a bit of time, some kind people put up with my ignorance and educated me on this topic. I now know it as something that waters down the cultural significance of particular garb, practices, or gestures. It removes it from the original context and places it as acceptable for the majority, with the majority often claiming it as their own. Usually, the majority still shame those from that culture for doing those things themselves.
It is a harmful behavior that occurs too often, and I apologize for trivializing it in my earlier youth. I was much more ignorant and impulsive then, but I was also wrong.
