Thomas completed a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction before entering medical school in New Jersey. During his medical education, he co-founded a mentorship program for adolescents living with HIV. He held multiple leadership roles in a student-run free clinic, including serving as clinic director. He also helped implement a team-based training program to improve communication and safety in clinical environments. His service was recognized with a distinction in community engagement.

During residency, he contributed to curriculum development and participated in educational initiatives centered on health equity. As a fellow, his research focuses on enhancing communication between healthcare providers and families in the pediatric intensive care unit, particularly during acute respiratory failure cases.
