( @-ofsongbirds ) ( normally wiress would shy away, curl in on herself, shut down and try to keep the tears at bay, keep them as quiet as possible. but something about the soft southern lull of lucy gray’s voice, of the delicate nature of her words, makes something inside her break, makes the dam burst before she has time to think to stop it. shaky, broken sobs tear through her throat as big, glassy tears spill from her eyes and roll down her cheeks. her hands shot up, the heels pressing hard into her eyes to try and make the tears stop, though to no avail. her shoulders tremble, quaking as they curl in, as if she’s trying to shield herself from something )

( @villagesview- ) ( for a moment, guilt tugs at wiress’ heart, donna shouldn’t have to worry about watching out for her in the arena, she should worry about keeping herself alive, and wiress knows she’ll only slow her down, only lessen her chances. and as she takes in the details of the girl’s face, heads her words, sees that all too familiar sad twinkle in her eyes, all wiress can see is haymitch, and suddenly she’s nineteen again, roping in a boy who knew not yet the horrors of the world in their ragtag plan to destroy the system that was the lifeblood of their ‘great’ country. she can’t make that mistake again, can’t take any more from haymitch, can’t be the reason he loses someone else. delicately, she reaches forward, placing a hand on donna’s knee and giving it a soft squeeze. she’ll watch this girl’s back, but not to increase her own chances, but to make sure donna makes it out of there alive. wiress knows she isn’t going to live, but she’s willing to do anything to make sure belladonna does. she shrugs simply at the girl’s comments on her own games, it had never felt smart, even in the years after, it had felt cowardly, even if haymitch has told his daughter otherwise )

/ sorry for rambling- i fear the idea of wiress being in the games with haymitch’s daughter and only being able to see him and the mistakes she made before is haunting me-

{ rare sincerity lines the smile donna offers in response to wiress' own as she takes an open seat near the elder, admiration gleaming in her eyes despite how she may deny it later. truth be told, she has respect for nearly every survivor of the games — having seen so many go off over the course of her life, she knows it isn't easy. } i'll watch your back in there, { she continues, the silence no offense in the wake of what dad's told her. } but i don't think you'll need it. dad's told me how you survived the last time; that was pretty smart.

( @villagesview- ) ( the words tug a small smile from wiress’s lips, the corners of her eyes crinkling up. it’d been a long time since someone other than beetee had shared that sentiment, even back home. she’d gotten used to it, even if the words
still stung from time to time, but it’s nice to hear that someone else thinks otherwise )

it’s nice to see you again, wiress. even if the circumstances aren’t too great. ( haymitch chuckled, although there was no humor behind it. his tone shifted with his next words. ) i believe in you, you know? i just want you to know that. you mentored me, and you survived one hell of a game yourself.

( @villagesview- ) ( wiress hesitates for a moment, she / knows / she doesn’t bring much to the table, hell, she won her games by burrowing up insider her too-big, too-bright arena uniform behind a rock until it was all over, she doesn’t want to slow donna down, doesn’t want to get her killed, doesn’t want to be the reason haymitch loses someone else, but she also doesn’t wanna be alone, not now, and not when she dies, so she nods quickly, reaching one hand out to the girl )
