I'm better at describing things now but I've had the same problem as you, and I'm not just saying that.
I don't know if I've already written this but I heard it and thought I should share. When you describe a new place or thing or whatever, think about:
What do you hear?
What do you see?
What do you smell?
What is going on?
What do you feel?
It works for me when I keep that in mind, obviously it takes longer to write but to me the end result is worth it that extra time. Hope it works just as well for you.
With people you should be very thorough in your description. If you stick to being more vague it's sometimes hard to picture it so thorough is, at times, the better option. Also you don't have to describe a person fully the first time the character shows up in the story. You can weave it into you story and slip a little bit in here and there as it progresses.
Thorough description: slanted eyes, slim lips, heart-shaped face, square jaw...
Vague description: brown hair, blue eyes... (you write the bare minimum)
I hope I'll read your story on here soon and I hope I've been helpful:)
All the best
