Maybe Patchalice (Patchouli Knowledge x Alice Margatroid) was an innocent mistake... Maybe Reimu Hakurei isn't supposed to be paired with Marisa Kirisame, or anyone, really.
Reimu is a shrine maiden, and shrine maidens are only allowed to marry or have lovers after quitting their jobs. However, Buddhists and hermits are still apparently allowed to marry, but the fact remains.
It could be just that Alice and Patchouli are merely good friends, and Alice and Marisa have known each other since childhood that they are compatible. Koakuma would be matched to Patchouli, if we ignore what happened in KKHTA.
It's a shame though... I've always thought Patchalice to be that underrated, quiet, introverted, intelligent magician ship.
