As for getting engagements- that's mostly up to Wattpad and their algorithm. However, I found that updating frequently/at a set schedule (e.g. every Friday at noon) will set off some bells in the algorithm and start pushing your stories out to the front a bit more. I rarely update anymore, so I don't get a ton of foot traffic around here anymore, but I used to when I updated frequently enough.
I also made friends with a lot of popular fanfic writers and would write fanfics specifically they enjoyed, that way they'd read them and add them to their reading list, thus putting my fics on display for thousands of their followers to see. Making connections is very important on this app, but I am worried there are much less people here now since Wattpad's downfall... Publishing your fics in more than one place (Ao3, Fanfiction net, etc.) can help with engagements as well, that way you're reaching multiple audiences!
