Humans love recognition. The thought of being remembered after death is comforting. Not ever being forgotten--thats everyones dream. To do something memorable and make your way into history.
We also love praise. Even if you don't die, you'll be remembered for saving your friends--and possibly the world. Without praise and recognition, even of the smallest amount, we can't thrive. We survive off of those two things.
