"At some point, parallel to his trail, another set of footprints had appeared. Larger. Longer. Following. The prints mirrored his path for at least thirty yards before veering off into the trees.
Wes crouched, heart hammering in his throat now, and traced the edge of a boot-shaped impression.
Not a wolf. Nor a cougar. And it definitely wasn’t a bear.
He swallowed hard and made himself take notes anyway, as though the act of cataloguing could make it make sense: Additional tracks. Undetermined. Possible overlap with a hiker or hunter.
But hikers rarely went this deep into the mountains and it wasn’t the season for hunting. He straightened quickly and forced himself to keep walking, eyes fixed on the path ahead. The snow creaked beneath his boots, echoing too loud in the hushness of the forest."
