In the true spirit of the month, since I'm more about the spooky than the pumpkin spice, here is a peak at what I'm currently writing, Ellie. This novel is set to come out October 2019 or thereabouts. Enjoy, and stay tuned for other spooky reads throughout this month!
"A darkness hung in the air, pregnant with the most unexplainable fear. There was another morning where I had felt this; in September of 2001. I remember the same feeling loom over me, as if a terrible storm was collecting just a few feet above my sleeping body. I’d awoken that day and read about the attacks on the world trade center, I’d attributed it to that. This feeling today though, is much worse. I laid there with my eyes tightly shut gradually coming out of sleep as if my instincts themselves were forcing me awake in an effort of self-preservation.
My eyes opened suddenly. The air in the room was much colder than it had been when I fell asleep. I shivered sitting up. My eyes, having adjusted to the darkness, looked about for an open window and saw none. I reached for my mobile phone checking the time; 3:15am. I set it down and the light shone upward to the ceiling and then shut itself off.
I sat up and put feet to the floor deciding to go investigate. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end and I took a deep breath trying to calm down. The wooden floor creaked as I rounded the first bedpost. I stepped to the side to avoid the luggage rack at the end of the bed.
As I came up to the second bedpost I could feel my hands growing cold and clammy. My adrenaline flared up forcing blood to my legs and feet so I could run. "What is wrong with me?", I wondered. My stomach went light as fear gripped my chest and slipped down my spine. The fear materialized in front of me as I stood before the doorway to the kitchen where someone else was watching me."
