in line with the current discourse surrounding wasians, i’ve always been bothered by how both media and fandom spaces constantly favor those with the closest proximity to whiteness. it’s almost always wasians or east asians who are pushed to the forefront and treated as the default representation of the entire asian community, as if asia itself is not the largest and one of the most culturally, racially, and ethnically diverse continents in the world.
even in fanfiction and applyfic spaces, wasians and east asians are almost always treated as the ideal faceclaims, while south asians, southeast asians, west asians, central asians, and north asians are frequently sidelined or ignored because they do not align with westernized standards of attractiveness. there’s an obvious hierarchy at play where the closer someone is to whiteness, the more visible, desirable, and accepted they become, even within asian communities themselves.
you can see how deeply internalized this mindset is through things like that one problematic wasian meetup that openly excluded other half asians for not being half white. it’s genuinely upsetting seeing asian identity reduced into something that only feels acceptable when it is palatable to western standards, especially when asia itself is so much bigger and diverse than the narrow image people constantly try to confine it to.

omg this!!! it used to be so bad in old wattpad i just wouldn’t apply to fics bc they ended up having a white/east asian only cast. the fact that the ppl who led the wasian meetup advertised it online as mixed-asian for it to just be wasians is awful

oh, i agree wholeheartedly! it’s not really representation if only one portion of the community is constantly being represented while everyone else gets sidelined. this is honestly part of why so many of my OCs are southeast asian, because if barely anyone else is going to create or center them, then i will!

@kalocabbage i guess my main issue is that there is already so much wasian and east asian representation in media and fandom spaces, yet they are still constantly treated as the default representation for all asians when there are so many other asian ethnicities that deserve visibility too. and don’t get me wrong, i’m genuinely happy that wasian and east asian people are able to feel represented. but at the same time, what about the rest of asia? part of why this happens in my opinion is because wasians are half white and therefore often seen as more “palatable” to western audiences and beauty standards. that proximity to whiteness makes them easier for mainstream media and fandom spaces to uplift and center, while other asian groups are pushed further into the background. and it becomes even more noticeable when you look at asian ethnicities with darker complexions, like many south asians and southeast asians, who are so often disregarded or excluded entirely because they do not fit eurocentric standards of beauty. you yourself have experienced getting questioned bc you have darker complexion compared to the average asian, which is already a problem in itself. and that’s what feels so disheartening about it all. asia is incredibly vast and diverse, yet the representation people constantly uplift only reflects such a narrow portion of it.
