i must admit, the way that people act about stories with LGBT characters on this website makes me really really sad and upset, especially as a queer person. not only is it so widely accepted as okay to say that you won't read certain books because of LGBT characters, i've even been in situations where no one explicitly stated that on their profile and yet once it was time to review or read a story of mine, they refused because one of the side characters is queer. i just have such a hard time wrapping my head around why a side character's queer identity - which has no relation to any plot point, especially not any romantic story line - would bother someone so much, outside of the obvious reason. i don't understand how this doesn't hurt and bother more queer people on the site, because i feel like i'm the only one complaining. everytime im told that an lgbt character makes someone uncomfortable i internalize it, and it makes me realize how my life and my feelings and my existence as a queer person makes so many people uncomfortable. how is that okay to say about any marginalized community? sorry about this rant! it is just my least favorite aspect of wattpad...

@verybean This is what I find so hurtful too: "These people want to only read things that imagine a world free from queer people." That's it exactly. It feels like these so-called book "preferences" are really life preferences, a desire to live their lives without seeing, thinking about, or ever having to encounter queer people. They can't get away with avoiding queer people's existence or shutting people completely out in real life without justified accusations of homophobic and transphobic discrimination, but they can get away with it with books and use claims of "personal freedom" as a shield against critiques of their behavior. Are other people so distasteful to these folks they'd rather just live in a narrow little bubble filled only with people just like them so they never have to try to get over their feelings of discomfort?

@ostromn thank you for this reply. its makes me feel less crazy to know im not the only one who feels this way! and its very hard not to take it personally, because it isnt just a preference for writing, it feels like a judgement on me as a person, and all the queer people i love as well. it makes me really sad especially because its like these people want to only read things that imagine a world free from queer people. it feels like replicating the same marginalization i experience everyday but also on a platform that's supposed to make me feel welcome. at the very least i didn't think such things would matter so much, especially in 2022. it really means a lot to me that you took the time to reply, i feel a bit less alone on this issue!

@verybean I hate it too. People here act like it is acceptable to be homophobic... just a matter of personal freedom that shouldn't be criticized. And the widespread claim that feeling "uncomfortable" reading about an LGBTQ character--so uncomfortable they might not be willing to even try reading at all, let alone work to actually overcome their bias as they read--is somehow magically NOT homophobia is both ridiculous and discouraging. "I'm repelled by any content that depicts queer people having lives" is homophobia and deeply hurtful.
