( it was relieving to not be met with anger. she expected it, not because of him, but memories. sure, it was instances that happened several decades into the past, but some wounds are too difficult to heal when all you have is yourself. and when you generally cared as little for yourself as she did .. you give up on healing all together. she did. )

i think .. two-hundred and sixty— no, seventy something? somewhere around those numbers, if i’ve been keeping track right. ( the words left her with a lot less tension now, feeling like she could breathe. )

( having been alive— could it even be considered that?— for so long, she’d grown bored over time. she didn’t know what year she lived in until after she was eighteen, barely even knowing her own birthday— a day she hated with passion. but she’d given up on counting several times as the decades passed, restarting yet again inevitably; the need to control at least some part of how her life was measured always did get to her. )

he watched her quietly, listening to every word she said. of course he had looked her up— many times, because that was what he did as the intelligence for the bratva: first contact for information, especially classified or sensitive, and he always needed to know who he was dealing with. it was clearly his job.

but all his resources had failed to identify salem. he had kept his search private, careful that no one would question why he was digging so cautiously, yet he had been unlucky with his findings. curious, it was. he had only known bits and pieces of who salem was, and only from the information she had willingly provided. though he kept that to himself— the fact that he’d looked her up, or at least tried to.

hearing her explain herself made it clear why she was never mentioned in his vast database. to put it simply: she didn’t exist. “interesting,” he finally said, giving a soft nod. “so, how old are you, really?”

right, ( she nodded, fingers tapping gently against the nearest surface to calm her nerves. ) so, uh, i’m not sure if i ever told you, but i’m kinda [ really ] really old. or like— i would be, if i, y’know, aged normally. but well— when i was born, my parents didn’t tell anyone. like at all. and i was easy to hide .. so uh, when i left, i had nothing. and it’s not easy to fill out paperwork for someone who legally never existed. especially when they’d also be, kinda technically dead, should any tests be run on them. so .. i was kinda hidden away again, and ‘s too late now, y’know? ( she slowly lifted her head to look at him. )
