For me, the most important thing is to make sure I know my characters very, very well before I start writing. I think all about every aspect of their lives—where they live, who their friends are, what their family is like, their favorite foods and music, and so on—so that I can provide important details along the way. I give each character strengths and flaws, in the hope that readers can relate to the character and will really care about them. In my stories, no one is a super-perfect hero or a completely evil villian. Everyone has layers which hopefully makes the characters interesting!
