Then Clara notices the supplies before she notices the money, which makes the revelation feel almost inevitable. The chapter is quietly asking whether material improvement can ever be called progress when the person receiving it is disappearing inside it.

          The imagery in this chapter is gorgeous. The blue ribbon, the chocolates, the white shirt, the music, the school gate, and then the dark bedroom and the wet pillow. It feels almost like the scene begins as a romantic teenage painting and slowly turns into something much darker. The visual contrast makes Alejandro’s emotional collapse even more devastating.
