just a reminder that plagiarizing someone’s fanfic and thus their hard work is ugly behavior!! my dear friend, Cor, has now been harassed and stalked because she posted proof that her fic was copied word for word and reposted to ao3 under an anon acct. She has had to go private and take her fics down because of this coward’s friends sending her threats and heinous messages, and now they’re all reposting her fics under their anon accounts.
It’s deplorable behavior. GLBH has had issues with people plagiarizing, and I am grateful that those issues were resolved to some extent (which is why I never went public with the first person who did it, as they are popular on here and have since republished the fic I guess and edited it. other instance as of late have been bad but I’m too cautious after how I was treated last time I approached someone for plagiarizing full sentences and quotes) and Cor has been my rock when I get self conscious and sad about my writing being stolen, and I can’t imagine what she’s going through rn. So if you ever consider copy and pasting someone’s fanfic “just cause it’s fanfic”, please reconsider.
It’s not going to make you popular. It’s not going to be gratifying. It’s not going to end well.
It doesn’t matter if it’s just fanfic. It doesn’t matter if it seems like other people have done a storyline or plot before. If you are scraping work from other authors, what’s the point? And what’s the point in harassing them? What’s the point in denying the confrontation when you have plagiarized? I’ve never seen such a blatant issue with this before except in the HOTD fandom, and it’s atrocious.
Please just write for yourself. With your own words. And if you realize you’ve been inspired (huge different between inspiration and copying), please tag the author and their work! It’s really very simple. And much more gratifying when it’s *YOUR* work, not a husk of someone else’s.
