Today is a sad day.

A day to mourn and celebrate.

Though many will not know what was lost 41 years ago today. We lost many things but gained some as well.

Harry James Potter lost his chance at a normalish life. He lost his parents, his chance to be with his godfather and a potential uncle. But he gained a reputation and a scar (as well as an entire language).

James and Lily Potter lost there lives and chance to watch their son grow up. The chance to send him off to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, our home we dearly love.

Remus Lupin lost 4 friends in a single night and Sirius Black lost his freedom, the trust of his friends and chance to raise his godson.

Voldemort’s first downfall was at the hands of the saviour of the Wizarding World, albeit a bit small. He lost many things but his inevitable rise was only postponed.

So whether your celebrating or mourning today, just remember the lives lost 41 years ago. We will never truly know how many gave their lives to protect the Wizarding World (because the author didn’t tell us) but we can be sure that they died for a good reason and the world wouldn’t be the same without their sacrafice.

So go out, vandalise your neighbourhoods, illegally trespass on someone else’s property, demand candy, make sure they aren’t laced with anything or have razor blades in them. But just remember the sacrifices made 4.1 decades ago.
