nick wasn't usually one to be all sentimental like this , but when he'd dug in the drawer of the side table in the living room and found some old letters , he couldn't help it . while allen was changing clothes in another room , he was flipping through the letters with a faint smile .

there was something wrong with nick . not physically — he looked fine on the outside — but something just felt ... off . he didn't hold any passion , didn't have that spark in his eyes . no matter how he tried to hide it , he always just seemed , well , empty .

alice was working the shop alone that day , as her brother was at another job and nick had fallen ill . she never liked working by herself , the customers were ruthless , but sometimes she had a reprieve . like now — currently she was sitting behind the counter , working on a colouring book . she glanced up when the bell at the front door rang , signaling a customer had entered .
