Kylie caught up to Ruby in the parking lot after rehearsal.

          “Ruby!”

Ruby stopped walking but didn’t turn around right away.

          “What?”

Kylie frowned. “You’ve barely talked to me all week.”

          “I’ve been busy.”

          “No, you’ve been avoiding me.”

          Ruby finally faced her.

          “I haven’t been avoiding you.”

“Then why do you leave every time I walk into a room?”

Ruby looked at her for a few seconds before answering.

          “Because I’m tired.”

          “Tired of what?”

          “This.”

          Kylie blinked. “This… what?”

Ruby let out a small laugh, one that sounded more defeated than amused.

          “Being in the middle.”

          Kylie’s expression softened. “Ruby…”

“I’ve spent months listening to everyone else’s side.” Ruby shrugged. “Yours. Malia’s. Malachi’s.”

          “I never asked you to—”

          “You didn’t have to.”

          Silence.

“You’d call me after every argument.”

          Kylie looked down.

“Malia would text me asking if I knew what was going on.”

          Another silence.

“And somehow,” Ruby whispered, “I stopped being your best friend and became the person everyone vented to.”

Kylie took a cautious step forward.

“I know things have been messy, but we’ll figure it out.”

          Ruby shook her head.

          “That’s the thing.”

          “What?”

          “I don’t think we will.”

          Kylie searched her face.

“So… what? You’re just going to stop talking to me?”

          Ruby didn’t answer.

Instead, she pulled Kylie into a hug.

It caught Kylie completely off guard.

For a moment, Kylie hugged her back without thinking.

When Ruby let go, her eyes were glossy.

          “You’ll be okay.”

          Kylie’s stomach dropped.

          “Ruby…”

          “Take care of yourself.”

She turned around and walked to her car.

Kylie stood there, expecting her phone to buzz later that night.

          It never did.

The next morning, there was no “good morning” text.

          No memes.

          No random FaceTime.

          No “are you awake?”

          Just silence.

          And somehow…

That hurt more than any goodbye ever could.
